North America, highest ATMs per branch

According to 2015 data released by World Bank, North America region has the highest number of ATMs per branch. In this region, with every branch, banks have an average of 8 active ATMs, however, South Asia region has the lowest number of ATMs per branch.

EBI News, this data reveals that the lowest number of bank branches (per capita) are located in low income countries with an average of 3 branches per 100,000 adults. Figure 1 shows that the world has 13 branches per 100,000 adults, however, most of the branches (per capita) are located in Europe and North America with an average of 28 branches per 100,000 adults. Although there is some exceptions.

Highest number of branches are located at Colombia and San Marino with 258 and 239 branches per 100,000 adults respectively. Lowest number of branches are located at Ukraine with more than 2 branches per 200,000 adults.

According to figure 2, number of ATMs (per capita) are lowest in low income countries and, with a very big gap, highest in North America. North America has two times more than number of ATMs per capita in OECD members and three times more than European Union. Number of ATMs around the globe are 41 per 100,000 adults, according to this database.

Figure 3 shows the number of ATMs per each branch in the studied regions. Although low income countries have lowest number of branches and ATMs per capita, the number of ATMs per branch are higher than South Asia and some of Middle East countries. Throughout the world, there are 3 ATMs for each bank branch. This ration is a bit more than what observed in Euro area and European Union. Interestingly, number of ATMs per branch in East Asia and Pacific is higher than most of the world (excluding North America). This implies that financial technologies are growing faster in this countries.
